Kimberly Jongejan (she/her) Cultural Programs Coordinator & Northglenn Youth Theatre and Academy Program Director
She has been with the City of Northglenn in the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department since 1996. Kimberly has directed over 100 productions in the past three decades and has had thousands of aspiring young actors participate. Her work with the Northglenn Youth Theatre (NYT) and the NYT Academy has garnered both local and national honors. Kimberly has served on a variety of boards and committees including the Colorado Community Theatre Coalition,Colorado Theatre Guild, and Theatre for Youth Coalition. She is a very active theater adjudicator across the state and sees over 50 productions in a year. She is thrilled to be part of the Northglenn Arts team. When not at the theatre, you can find her out shopping, on picnics with her family, serving up a fondue feast, collecting oddities or kicking cancer’s tush.
A message from Kimberly:
“In February of 1996, I came on staff at the City to “help wrangle the kids” for the NYT production of “The Velveteen Rabbit.” It was supposed to be a short-term job… and here it is almost 30 years later. It was NYT’s 5th show and at the time NYT had large cast(s) for their shows (one in spring and the other in fall) – casting youth ages 8-18. Auditions were held, although everyone would be cast because it was a fledgling program and they needed all the participants they could get. By the summer of ’96, we introduced a summer drama camp program – 50 kids, ages 8-18, full-days, for 8 weeks – it was insane – and I was pregnant with our first child. After that summer, we knew that this community would support a premier youth theater program. Every season since then, NYT has grown. Lots more kids meant more shows, more selective auditions and a demand for more “beyond the stage” opportunities. The NYT Academy came along and there were a bunch of new classes and more camps. When the 2020 pandemic hit, NYT was forced to pivot so that we could continue on our mission to providing theatrical arts and building our community for the next generations. And so, forced participant limits gave birth to NYT Jr. – a way where we could put on performances, but with smaller casts by dividing up the age groups. We wore clear masks, spaced out our blocking, rehearsed via Zoom and made the magic happen! In 2021 we moved into our new space. Not gonna lie, on the last night in the original space, I sat in the dark theatre, stared at the ghost light and cried big crocodile tears. I was treasuring up every moment: laughter, applause, goosbumps, joys, defeats… all of it. So many precious things. And after we held rehearsal for the opening ceremony here at the “new” Parsons theatre, I sat in the dark, staring at that same ghostlight brought over to this stage and cried even bigger crocodile tears imagining all of the wonderment that lay ahead.
NYT’s future looks so bright as we continue to grow and bloom. The newest “branch” is our NYT3 program (Technical Theater Track), which will deepen and expand the technical theater opportunities for our youth. We’re also deeply committed to making NYT more and more accessible, in lots of wonderful ways. More voices, more stories, more creativity… these all equal a beautifully growing community. And what could be more incredible than that?
In these recent years, it has been an honor to see all the ways the NYT kids (and families) have continued to foster the arts in their lives, communities and beyond. We’re now seeing the children and even one grandchild of NYT alumni finding their artistic voices here at NYT. In this Nemo cast, we have a 2nd generation NYT’er – and there is no single better joy than that for a long-timer like me.
So with a heart full of gratitude and joy, I am honored to take my bow with the NYT Jr. program as the Program Director. My last official show will be “Wizard of Oz” this spring and then I will be truly delighted to sit back and watch all of the ways NYT will continue to grow. I’ll be there, smiling through my crocodile tears, cheering everyone on and soaking in all that light.” With love, Kimberly
