THE ORCHESTRA

Rodney Sauer founded the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, a five-piece ensemble dedicated to performing authentic silent film scores using historic “photoplay music.” He has scored over 150 films, preserved multiple archives of early cinema music for the University of Colorado, and created the Photoplay Music Starter Kit to help others compose for silent films. Mont Alto tours nationally, performing at major festivals including San Francisco, Telluride, and TCM. In 2023, Sauer received the David Shepard Career Achievement Award from the Denver Silent Film Festival.

Britt Swenson earned her B.M. and M.M. from the Juilliard School and made her Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops Orchestra. She has performed internationally with artists such as Jean-Pierre Rampal, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Yehudi Menuhin, and appears on over 30 film soundtracks. A recipient of the Frank Huntington Beebe Fellowship, she studied at the Mozarteum Academy in Salzburg. Britt currently performs with the Colorado Ballet Orchestra and teaches at Parlando School for the Arts in Boulder.

Dawn Kramer is a Denver-based freelance trumpet player and member of the Boulder Brass, Darren Kramer Organization, Conjunto Colores, and the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra. She also performs as second trumpet at the Buell Theatre and has subbed with the Colorado Symphony and other regional ensembles. A Colorado native and CU alumna, she has toured internationally with several groups—including Matchbox Twenty—and appeared on major TV shows such as The Tonight Show and The Late Show with David Letterman.

David Short, cellist, joined the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra in 2007 and is an active performer, arranger, and educator based in Denver. He performs with the Playground Ensemble, Opera Colorado, and is a founding member of Sphere Ensemble, where his arrangements appear on their acclaimed album Divergence. An educator, David teaches privately and mentors at the Denver School of the Arts, which was a finalist for the 2023 American Prize for Orchestral Performance. He was named Private Teacher of the Year by the Front Range Youth Symphony in 2023.

Brian Collins is principal clarinetist with the Longmont Symphony Orchestra, and performs with the Colorado Mahler Festival. He has also performed with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, Boulder Philharmonic, Boulder Sinfonia, Louisvillle Symphony, Denver Symphony, Boulder Concert Band, and too many other orchestras to count.
