Director’s Notes
Little Women is an enduring portrait of the March siblings as they move from childhood into adulthood, navigating the trials and joys of family life. It is a story of love – both familial and romantic – and of perseverance, as we watch Meg, Jo, Amy, and Beth strive to define themselves, balance ambition with responsibility, and remain true to their values in a complicated world. Our production centers on the ways that love and grief shape identity and connection, revealing the resilience of the human spirit in moments of loss and transition.
Ultimately, though, this is Jo’s story, and the journey from spunky, stubborn adolescent to self- realized adult is the emotional core of the narrative. Though rooted in a specific time and place, this story feels timeless because it explores what it means to come of age in any era – to seek purpose, to long for belonging, and to discover that love and integrity are the truest measures of a meaningful life.
What makes this production of Little Women particularly special is Phamaly Theatre Company’s intentional and collaborative approach to inclusive storytelling. After casting, our creative team worked directly with the playwright to incorporate the specific disabilities and lived experiences of our actors into the fabric of the script itself. The characters now reflect and share the identities of the artists portraying them – not as afterthoughts or symbolic gestures, but as essential, meaningful elements of who these people are. This deliberate integration deepens the emotional truth of the story, offering audiences an interpretation of Little Women that celebrates both authenticity and the beauty of human diversity. The result is a version of Little Women that is wholly unique to this company, this ensemble, and this moment in time.
Thank you for being here, and I hope you enjoy the show!
