Despite all of our best efforts, the show cannot go on – the cast was in place, the budget identified, filming logistics taken care of, and social distancing measures implemented. The final hurdle, production rights, proved to be one we were not able to work through. This is an issue that has come up throughout the theatre industry for several years now. Although it will be too late for a virtual production of Spelling Bee, we are hopeful that a means of securing rights for virtual performances will be a (positive!) outcome from COVID-19. All is not lost, as our intention is to move Spelling Bee forward to the 2021 summer production, with a live audience in place. At this time, we have redirected our efforts to other alternative summer events, including drive-in concerts and drive-in movies during July and August. Both received the go-ahead from Tri-County Health Department (TCHD). We will continue to work with TCHD to ensure that any of the programming or events we offer this summer are in alignment with the current public health standards.
